{"id":225,"date":"2011-05-21T12:20:57","date_gmt":"2011-05-21T19:20:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/betherebedtimestories.wordpress.com\/?p=225"},"modified":"2011-05-21T12:20:57","modified_gmt":"2011-05-21T19:20:57","slug":"i-predict-you-will-like-this-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/read.betherebedtimestories.com\/?p=225","title":{"rendered":"I Predict You Will Like This One!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/ikAqjW\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-240\" title=\"Meet_the_Planets_Featured_Cover\" src=\"https:\/\/betherebedtimestories.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/meet_the_planets_featured_cover1.jpg?w=214\" alt=\"\" width=\"174\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/read.betherebedtimestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/meet_the_planets_featured_cover1.jpg 250w, https:\/\/read.betherebedtimestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/meet_the_planets_featured_cover1-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 174px) 100vw, 174px\" \/><\/a>We received a Be There Bedtime Story from Aunt\u00a0Ali last night.\u00a0 She read a book called <em>Meet the Planets<\/em> by John McGranaghan.\u00a0 After her cheery greeting she asked the girls \u201cWhat do you think this story will be about?\u201d. \u00a0 This one simple question immediately\u00a0engaged my daughters with the text.\u00a0\u00a0 Their brains went into making an inference based\u00a0on the cover.\u00a0 This is a higher-level brain activity that teachers use\u00a0many times a day.\u00a0 All this, from one simple question.\u00a0 The girls were ready to\u00a0find out if their prediction was correct as Aunt Ali read on.<\/p>\n<p>As I mentioned last week, a great resource for parents\u00a0who want to make the most of their\u00a0shared reading time with their child is\u00a0called 7<em> Keys to Comprehension; How to Help\u00a0Your Kids Read It and Get It!<\/em>\u00a0 by Susan Zimmermann and Chryse\u00a0Hutchins.\u00a0 There is an entire chapter\u00a0dedicated to making predictions that is written in a simple, approachable way\u00a0for anyone.<\/p>\n<p>Making predictions is one of the first reading strategies\u00a0you can use in order to engage your young readers. \u00a0Use the cover of the book to make some predictions (right\u00a0along with generating some questions too, if they come up!). \u00a0You can ask \u201cWhat do you think will happen next?\u201d in many\u00a0parts of the story. \u00a0When a problem develops in a story ask your reader how\u00a0they think that problem might eventually be resolved.<\/p>\n<p>Once you begin prompting your young one to make\u00a0predictions while reading a book, it becomes a nice habit you will never want to\u00a0break!
