One way to help engageĀ intermediate readers (usually 4th grade and up) is to help them develop preferences and tastes as a reader. Ask them if they have thought about what their favorite type of literature is and what their least favorite one is. Some options may be fiction or non-fiction. Go deeper with determining preferences between realistic fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, poetry, informational text or biographies among others.

You could also ask them if they have enjoyed a book by a certain author and the help them look up other titles by the same author. Read a book along with them and use the strategies mentioned before such as questioning, making connections and visualizing to help them to engage with the reading. Ask their teacher if any opportunities for literature circles (book clubs for kids) exist during the school day. In helping them to see themselves as a reader they will do it more which means practicing reading. The more you do anything, the better you get at it. Motivation is key!
